Johannesburg - Jimi Matthews, who was acting group CEO of SABC before his resignation today, is a man who has worked his way up the ranks.

Matthews said in his resignation letter: "What is happening at the SABC is wrong", saying that he can no longer be part of the broadcaster.

In his resignation letter, he wrote that his belief that he would be more effective inside the SABC, than being on the outside, was mistaken.

He tweeted a picture of letter of resignation , saying that, "I have quit the SABC". Matthew's resignation was addressed to Professor Maguvhe, chairman of the SABC board.

In the letter, Matthews apologised to the people who he may have let down, "by remaining silent when my voice needed to be heard."

Having previously reported hard news for Reuters and e-TV, he worked his way up through the ladder of news broadcasting at the SABC. An article on the Daily Maverick in 2011 focussed on his ambition to steer the SABC in the right direction.

Within the article he was identified as , "The return of the veteran newsman" . This reflected on his experience. and how he infused his style on the news, and the SABC as a whole.

Matthews was appointed as head of TV news for SABC 2011. He was appointed acting CEO after Frans Matlala was suspended in November 2015.
