Work stoppage at Gold OneComment on this story
Mining activity at JSE-listed gold miner Gold One’s (GDO) Modder East operation has been interrupted.
According to the company‚ a large number of night-shift workers failed to report for duty on Sunday evening‚ and that a small number of day shift workers‚ represented by the Professional Transport Allied Workers Union (PTAWU)‚ embarked on an unprotected strike today.
Gold One said it did not recognise PTAWU as it represented fewer than 30% of the employees at Modder East.
“The strike action is unprotected as it contravenes the thee-year wage agreement signed on April 22 2010 between Gold One and the National Union of Mineworkers‚ which represents the majority of the 1‚800 employees at Modder East‚” the company said.
The company said it would continue to evaluate all options and would be implementing a “no work - no pay” policy.
“Management has ensured that contingency plans are in place to manage the impact of strike action and will continue to keep shareholders informed on further developments‚” the company said. - I-Net Bridge
