Johannesburg - Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has appealed for calm following clashes between mining unions in Northam, Limpopo, which has resulted in two deaths.

An Amcu member was killed on Monday following the murder of a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) member on Sunday.

Zwane said on Tuesday he would visit Northam on Thursday to assess the situation and what transpired between the unions.

He also called on all those concerned t0 allow the police to conduct their investigations and apprehend the perpetrators.

“We are also making an appeal to stakeholders not to engage in any conduct that would undermine the Framework Agreement for a Sustainable Mining Industry, particularly in ensuring the rule of law, peace and stability,” said Zwane.

On Monday NUM’s leadership visited the area to establish what had lead to the clashes.

The union said this was the sixth NUM member to be murdered since late last year.
