EADS NV subsidiary Airbus is planning to change the construction of wings for its A380 superjumbo jet at the end of the year to prevent a problem with cracks, a newspaper reported Monday.

Cracks were discovered several months ago in the components that join the internal structure of the wing to its metal skin.

The weight of the plane would not increase as a result of the production changes, which involve using a new material, the Financial Times Deutschland reported.

Planes already in service have had to be grounded for repairs.

Airbus has delivered 73 of the world's largest passenger planes to airlines to date.

Planes with the new wings should start to be delivered in late 2013 or early 2014. - Sapa-dpa
