Bulgarian police detained five men for an organised attack on the financial system as the government moved to stop the worst run on banks in 17 years. Police had arrested four men in Sofia and another in the city of Ruse, on suspicions they had spread “false, ill-intended information against a big Bulgarian bank to destabilise the banking system”, the State Agency for National Security said on Saturday. The men had used “cellphone and e-mail messages and social media to spread rumours prompting people to withdraw bank deposits”, it said. – Bloomberg
