German govt urges early vote on fiscal pact

The German government is urging both houses of parliament to vote on the permanent euro zone bail-out fund and new rules on budget discipline before the summer recess, Chancellor Angela Merkel's spokesman said on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday a source in the ruling centre-right coalition told Reuters lawmakers will not vote until at least mid-June on the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) and the so-called fiscal compact, casting doubt over the fund's planned start date of July 1.

Steffen Seibert said during a regular government press conference that parliament set its schedules independently, but the government encouraged lawmakers to vote before the recess. - Reuters
