Athens - Unemployment in Greece dropped in August to 25.9 percent in seasonally-adjusted terms, from July's revised estimate of 26.1 percent, the statistics agency ELSTAT said Thursday.

A total of 1.242 million people were out of work in the month.

The jobless rate was the lowest recorded in the crisis-stricken country since peaking at 28 percent in September 2013.

Unemployment among youths aged between 15 and 24 continued to be particularly high but fell to 49.3 percent, down from 58.6 percent the same period last year.

Greeks aged 25 to 34 were also struggling with an unemployment rate of 32.7 percent.

Greece has been in recession for the last six years, having implemented unpopular austerity measures demanded by international creditors in exchange for bailout loans. - Sapa-dpa
