GHANA

Cocoa bean crop to increase

Ghana, the second-biggest cocoa producer, would expand bean output by about 2 percent in the season starting in October, a researcher at its industry regulator said yesterday. Cocoa production might rise to about 850 000 tons during 2014/15 from 830 000 tons this season, said Emmanuel Opoku, the deputy director of research at the Ghana Cocoa Board. That would be the most since a record 1.025 million tons were collected in 2010/11. The government might pay farmers more for beans in the new season after prices climbed globally, he said. Futures rose 22 percent in the past year in London. “We should be able to harvest 850 000 in the coming season,” Opoku said. “Prices on the world market have improved. Farmers should receive more.” – Bloomberg

UGANDA

Investments boost growth

Uganda’s economy was forecast to expand 6.8 percent in the next fiscal year as the government boosted investment in road, energy and farming projects to spur growth, the Finance Ministry said yesterday. Gross domestic product was projected to rise 6 percent in the year through June, “slightly lower” than previously projected, a pre-Budget statement showed. Uganda faced disruptions in foreign aid flows in 2012 and last year over a corruption scandal and more cuts to external assistance this year after President Yoweri Museveni signed a law that strengthens punishments of homosexuals. – Bloomberg
