Kenya had selected 22 bidders to compete for the development of a 960 megawatt coal-fired power plant and a 700MW facility powered by natural gas, Energy Secretary Davis Chirchir said yesterday. Tata Power, Gulf Energy of Kenya and China’s Sinohydro Group were among 10 bidders that had received tender documents for the coal plant, Chirchir said. Twelve bidders, including Toyota Tsusho, a group led by Samsung C&T of South Korea and China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau were competing to construct the gas plant, he said. Kenya wants to add more than 5 000MW to the national grid by 2016, according to the energy ministry, as the government aims to double the annual economic growth rate to 10 percent. – Bloomberg
