Kenya had awarded a contract worth 43 billion shillings (R5.1bn) to build a fuel pipeline linking Mombasa and Nairobi to Lebanese construction firm Zakhem International, the state-run Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) said late on Tuesday. KPC said the existing pipeline, built by Zakhem in 1973, had outlived its 30-year life and was prone to ruptures. “Construction of the 20-inch multi-product oil pipeline from Mombasa to Nairobi is set to begin in earnest with the signing of the contract,” KPC managing director Charles Tanui said. – Reuters
