Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Chancellor Angela Merkel sought Monday to rally German lawmakers behind a 130-billion-euro (174.4-billion-dollar) bailout for debt-stricken Greece, warning of the consequences if Athens defaulted.
“Europe will fail if the euro fails,” the Chancellor told parliamentarians, adding that Germany planned to make its first 11-billion-euro contribution this year to Europe's new bailout fund - faster as previously planned.
In her speech, Merkel also warned that throwing Greece another financial lifeline was not without risks. “Nobody can provide a 100-per-cent guarantee of success,” she said.
The chancellor called on Greece to implement a series of structural reforms, to ensure that the conditions for the bailout are fulfilled. - Sapa-dpa
