Rabat - Morocco's foreign debt stood at 224.8 billion dirhams ($26.4 billion) at the end of the first half of 2013, its highest since at least 1998, the finance ministry said on Tuesday.

The North African kingdom has been hit in recent years by the euro crisis, Arab spring and bad weather, which forced the government to borrow from foreign lenders to plug deficits.

Debt owed by the treasury was at 122.5 billion dirhams, and guaranteed loans granted by foreign lenders to Moroccan government institutions at 102.3 billion. - Reuters
