Nigeria: Shell fails to fix spills - Amnesty

NIGERIA’S government and Royal Dutch Shell had failed to act on a 2011 UN report on oil pollution in Ogoniland in the Niger Delta, an Amnesty International joint assessment has said. A recommendation by the UN Environmental Programme to set up a $1 billion (R10.6bn) fund to clean up contaminated land had not been implemented and the government and Shell had taken little action, claimed the report published yesterday by Amnesty, the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development, Environmental Rights Action, Friends of the Earth Europe, and Platform. “Shell has not addressed the pollution and has continued to use deeply flawed clean-up practices,” the report said. – Bloomberg
