The office Christmas party is an opportunity for employers to reward staff for all their hard work throughout the year with one night of festive fun.

But some firms may consider cutting out the free booze in future, after researchers claimed hangovers cost UK businesses almost £260 million (R3.6 billion) in lost work hours over the party season.

According to the research, commissioned by web travel firm lastminute.com, about a quarter of employees work for fewer than four hours the day after the annual Christmas party because they are suffering ill-effects from the night before.

Of the 1 500 people, one in 10 admitted doing something they regretted, such as spreading gossip and kissing senior members of staff. – Daily Mail
