Uganda: Chinese firms to mine copper

A GROUP of Chinese firms, including Shanghai Baosteel Group, planned to restart the Kilembe copper mine in Uganda next year, more than three decades after the facility was closed, the manager of the project said last week. Operations would start with “small-scale mining” by the end of 2015 before ramping up in 2016 after rehabilitation work was completed, Alex Kwatampora Binego said. He did not provide output targets. The consortium, led by Tibet Hima Industry, won a contract to develop copper mines in Uganda last July after pledging $175 million (R2 billion) for upgrades. – Bloomberg
