Slowing food price rises dragged Ugandan inflation down to 4.9 percent in the year to June from 5.4 percent a month earlier, the statistics office said yesterday. On a month-on-month basis, consumer prices declined 1 percent last month after decreasing the same amount in May. “This is largely attributed to annual food inflation that decreased to 7.1 percent for the year ending June from 8.2 percent for the year ended May,” the Uganda Bureau of Statistics said. The prices of Irish potatoes, pineapples, sweet potatoes, plantains, milk and sugar all declined. Core inflation, which excludes both food and fuel costs, dipped to 2.7 percent last month from 3.3 percent in May. – Reuters
