US stock markets edged mostly lower at the open Wednesday, continuing the euro and data-inspired drop seen the day before.

The major indexes opened in the red amid lingering doubts about a bailout plan for Spain, weak US business confidence figures and the expectation of mediocre earnings.

Shortly after the open the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.21 percent, or 26.64 points, to 12,626.48.

The Nasdaq was down 0.25 percent, 7.12 points, to 2,895.21.

The S&P 500 stood at 1,341.58, up 0.11 points, or 0.01 percent.

Markets were also looking ahead to minutes from the Federal Reserve's most recent policy meeting, which will be released at 20:00 SA time. - Sapa-AFP
