An accountant was sentenced to seven years behind bars on Monday for fraud involving R450,000, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

The Bellville Regional Court in Cape Town earlier found Carene van der Westhuizen guilty on 111 counts of fraud and one of failing to submit a tax return, NPA Western Cape spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said in a statement.

She defrauded three entities she worked for by inflating expenses and then taking the difference between the inflated amount and the actual expense. She forged signatures on cheques and deposited a cheque meant for the SA Revenue Service into her own account.

Van der Westhuizen is the daughter of Marius van der Westhuizen, who was convicted of tax-related fraud and who committed suicide outside the Durbanville police station on the morning he was to be sentenced in August 2011. - Sapa
