About 2 000 striking miners rallied yesterday to protest against job cuts at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) as the strike entered its fourth day. Amplats wants to cut about 4 800 jobs, of which 1 500 will be voluntary retrenchments. Police in armoured vehicles looked on as miners marched in a field near the Thembelani mine near Rustenburg. Union leaders met management at 2pm for talks, officials for the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) said. “If they do not meet us at least half way, the strike will continue,” Thebe Maswabi, an Amcu branch chairman, said. The National Union of Mineworkers has said its members, who are not on strike, had been intimidated into staying away.
Amplats lost 0.87 percent to R436.19 yesterday, while the platinum index fell 0.84 percent. – Reuters
