About 100 000 jobs had been lost in the civil construction industry in South Africa since its peak in 2008, Aveng said yesterday.

It stressed that the medium-term outlook for the construction sector would be shaped by the robust implementation of the government’s national infrastructure development plan.

But chairman Angus Band told the general meeting the envisaged R844 billion public sector infrastructure programme had not yet translated into increased tender activity in the local market.

Band said the group’s potential order pipeline remained stable at R111bn. Shares closed 1.9 percent lower at R29.92. – Roy Cokayne
