Pretoria - BMW South Africa remains 100 percent committed to the ongoing production of its 3 Series sedan at the Rosslyn plant and is not threatening disinvestment from the region.
A joint statement issued on behalf of Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies and BMW SA managing director Bodo Donauer said the motor manufacturer had reiterated this view in a letter to Davies and in a meeting with him on Wednesday.
BMW wanted to clarify incorrect remarks attributed in recent media reports regarding its long-term investment.
Donauer told Davies lengthy strikes and the consequent non-supply of 15.8 percent of annual BMW 3 Series volume, most of which was destined for major export markets, had cost it a chance to compete for a potential second model. – Roy Cokayne
