Johannesburg - Business Unity SA (Busa) on Monday said it would like to see plans for implementing the National Development Plan (NDP) in President Jacob Zuma's state-of-the-nation address.

“We, as business, have been saying this is the long-term vision we needed to adopt as a country,” Busa chief executive Nomaxabiso Majokweni told reporters in Johannesburg.

“We need to ensure that the implementation is effected. We can't continue to have plans that are not effected.”

Uncertainty associated with the county's policies had been seen as a big contributor to inhibiting investment, but Busa believed the NDP went a long way to clarify these and bring about some certainty, she said.

Busa saw the NDP as a national rallying call.

“If we work together and we have a clear implementation plan, we can make the inroads we need,” said Majokweni.

She was talking about Busa's expectations of Zuma's state-of-the-nation speech at the opening of Parliament on Thursday.

Majokweni said the NDP talked about creating a capable state and the private sector should be seen as a willing partner.

The NDP could only work if the private sector could create jobs quickly enough.

“The president needs to talk to how we are going to grow the economy together,” she said.

If through the implementation of the NDP private firms, especially small and emerging business, could find it profitable to expand and create several hundred jobs annually then it would make a major contribution to reducing poverty.

Government could then focus its spending on alleviating extreme poverty and improving the quality of health, education, and other social services.

Majokweni said Busa would like to see more policies aligned to the NDP.

“The NDP needs to become the focal point... We believe in doing that we will achieve so much more.” - Sapa
