Cape Town - The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appointed Ruben Richards as its first CEO.

“He has extensive experience in top-level management and the academic world,” said spokeswoman Monique Johnstone in a statement on Tuesday.

Richards has qualifications in engineering, sociology, and theology. He was a former deputy director of the Scorpions.

He has served as a consultant for the United Nations and was a CEO for Globe Engineering.

The chamber's president Janine Myburgh said the organisation was fortunate to have a man of Richards' talent and experience.

Richards said he was excited by the challenge awaiting him at the chamber, and that business was where his focus would now lie.

“I see an opportunity to make use of the Cape Chamber's deep roots within business to invigorate the economy in the region. Increased economic activity is key.”
