Johannesburg - Hundreds of Communication Workers Union ( CWU) members are marching to the JSE to demand an end to outsourcing and retrenchments.

The union said on Thursday its core concern with the JSE was that companies like Telkom and MTN traded there to generate profits, yet workers were being retrenched or having their salaries cut.

Members of the union, dressed in CWU regalia, sang songs, referring to Telkom boss Sipho Maseko, and danced as they made their way to the JSE.

They carried posters reading "thousands of families are without food on the table and greedy Sipho pockets millions", "Sipho must fall" and "MTN down with outsourcing".

The CWU has for long raised issues with Telkom's restructuring policies which have resulted in hundreds of workers losing their jobs at a company in which government is the single biggest shareholder.

Telkom recently offered voluntary severance packages and signed outsourcing contracts that have led to a drop in the number of employees to 12 500 from 21 000.

This latest CWU march follows a similar protest which was headed by Cosatu last month to the Gauteng department of transport, Woolworths and Telkom.
