Johannesburg - SACP General Secretary, Blade Nzimande has called on members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to defend the alliance, warning them of attacks aimed at erasing the revolution.

Nzimande was addressing the union’s central committee meeting in Pretoria on Thursday.

The union is currently facing a major loss in membership, as well as financial issues which has left them barely above water.

“This is not a war just against NUM but it is to try and crack in the first instance, the strongest affiliate Cosatu, then the ANC and then try and isolate and defeat the SACP which will erase the entire revolution.”

He also called on the 700 delegates to guard the working class against those seeking to stabilise progressive organisations such as NUM.

“If there is any message that we are bringing to you,it is that nobody else will defend the interests of the working class, like the working class themselves.”

Nzimande was vocal about the challenges NUM is currently facing, vowing his party’s support to the union.

He called on the union’s members to prioritise unity, stand up, and be at the forefront of defending their revolution.

“If this revolution sinks, the first people who will sink will be the workers of this country.”
