Pretoria - Electricity generation fell by 3.5 percent year on year in May, while consumption fell by 2,7 percent over the same period, according figures from Statistics South Africa released on Thursday.

This indicates a likely shortage as production fell faster than consumption. Electricity production between January and May was down 2.4 percent this year compared to the corresponding period last year.

About 19.2 gigawatt hours were distributed in South Africa during May,slightly down from 19.7 gigawatt hours in May last year. This excluded electricity distributed to neighbouring countries which amounted to about 1.1 gigawatt hour, or that which flowed into South Africa, also at 1.1 gigawatt hour and the 1.4 gigawatt hours consumed in power stations and related systems.

Eskom still produced 95 percent of the country’s power, accounting for 19.77 gigawatt produced.
