Petrol price up, diesel down

The price of 93 octane petrol would increase by 5c a litre and 95 octane petrol would increase by 7c a litre in Gauteng this week, the Energy Department said on Friday. The different prices were informed by costs of production, which were adjusted quarterly, and by local and international factors, Energy Minister Ben Martins said. The price of diesel with a sulphur content of 0.05 percent would decrease by 8.8c a litre and diesel with 0.005 percent sulphur by 7.8c a litre. The price of illuminating paraffin would decrease by between 34.5c and 49c a litre, while the maximum retail price for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) would decrease by 22c a kilogram. “The decrease in the price of illuminating paraffin and LPG will benefit households that use these products, especially as winter approaches.” The prices would be different in other fuel pricing zones, he said. – Sapa

GSK to invest in new Africa sites

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) planned to make new investments in additional factories and drug research in Africa, its chief executive said yesterday, as the pharmaceuticals producer broadens its bet on promising emerging markets. Andrew Witty said the continent was important for GSK’s long-term growth, adding that the investment would create jobs and build up health-care capacity in a key region. “Africa’s transformation into a successful growth region is an area we need to focus on,” he wrote in the Sunday Telegraph newspaper. GSK, which makes drugs in Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, was looking at sites in Ghana, Rwanda and Ethiopia, said a spokeswoman. Witty will set out details of its multimillion-pound investment plans at a conference in Brussels today. – Reuters
