For the record

Business Report published an article titled “BHP Billiton digs record volumes of iron ore, coal” on April 17. The story stated that “the company has disinvested from South Africa”. The article also said “BHP Billiton has entered into talks with stakeholders on halting aluminium smelting at its Bayside operation in Richards Bay”.

Both these statements are incorrect.

BHP Billiton’s local mining and smelting operations are fully operational. In addition, BHP Billiton is having discussions and consultations with all interested parties to explore options for the Bayside operation, which will ensure a sustainable aluminium business can continue to operate in Richards Bay and South Africa. BR regrets the errors.
