Germany opts to withdraw from SKA

Germany has withdrawn from the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope project due to financial reasons, disabling it from funding large research infrastructure in Europe, it emerged yesterday. The radio telescope project is being developed in Australia and South Africa. There are 10 member countries in the SKA Organisation, which have all committed to funding detailed design studies. The SKA Organisation said Germany’s withdrawal would not immediately affect the project. Minister of Science and Technology Naledi Pandor said she would set up a meeting with Germany to discuss the matter. – Londiwe Buthelezi
