Gold Fields received a pat on the back for its sustainability performance when it was ranked third among listed companies in the mining segment of the 2012 Dow Jones Sustainability index (DJSI). The company was ranked fourth in 2011. The DJSI results, which were released at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos yesterday, indicated that Gold Fields’ sustainability practices ranked among the best of resource companies globally. “A strong performance in the DJSI is a milestone on our journey to leadership in sustainable gold mining, so our improved ranking shows that we are making good progress,” Gold Fields chief executive Nick Holland said. Gold Fields is rated the top global gold company on the DJSI and the highest ranked South African-listed and domiciled mining company. The DJSI annually ranks global sustainability leaders through an assessment of 3 200 public companies. The shares closed 0.5 percent up at R109.85. – Dineo Faku
