The Kloof Driefontein Complex (KDC) mine's East section will reopen late on Wednesday after being closed because of a lethal fire, Gold Fields Limited said.

Spokesman Sven Lunsche said in a statement the East section would reopen with the Wednesday night shift, following a fire at the weekend which killed five miners.

The KDC West section would remain closed, in accordance with a Section 54 order by the mineral resources department, until further notice.

“The fire at KDC West has not yet been extinguished and proto teams (underground rescue teams) continue to attend the scene,” Lunsche said.

A fire broke out in the Ya-Rona shaft in Merafong, near Carletonville, west of Johannesburg, on Saturday night.

Fourteen miners were taken to hospital. The injured workers stayed in hospital for observation and counselling. - Sapa
