Johannesburg - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has appointed retired judge Bernard Ngoepe as tax ombudsman, his ministry said on Tuesday.

“The office is intended to provide taxpayers with a low-cost mechanism to address administrative difficulties that cannot be resolved by the SA Revenue Service,” it said in a statement.

“Judge Ngoepe has sound experience in exercising impartiality, an understanding of how best to balance the powers and duties of Sars, and the rights and obligations of taxpayers. Above all, he is proficient in tax and administrative law.”

The appointment was in terms of the Tax Administration Act.

The ministry said further details would be announced “in due course”. - Sapa
