Green Paper on policy extended
The deadline for the public to comment on the Green Paper on the national integrated information and communication technology (ICT) policy had been extended to March 24, the Communications Department said yesterday, following requests from several stakeholders. National public hearings will be held on March 4, followed by public hearings in the provinces. The paper addresses broadcasting, postal services, telecommunications, e-services, cyber security, e-literacy and universal access and service. – Asha Speckman

Microsoft SA warns of scam
Microsoft South Africa has warned consumers of a telephone scam in which people pretending to represent the computer firm are tricking customers into parting with money. The callers claim to be from the Windows helpdesk service centre, Microsoft support, Windows technical support group and Microsoft’s research and development team. The scamster says they are checking a problem, infection or virus. Ashleigh Fenwick, a spokesperson, said yesterday: “Consumers should be aware that Microsoft will not cold call them with regards to malfunctioning PCs or viruses.” – Asha Speckman

Global lenders shun poor cities
Major cities in developing countries struggled to get funds for infrastructure projects from international financing institutions, adding to the inequality between poor and rich cities, Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau said yesterday. “The ability to access international financing in the developing world is limited because of the structure and mechanisms created,” he said at the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group’s mayors summit in the city. – Bloomberg
