Johannesburg - A “new north” for Joburg has been established with the opening of a multibillion- rand development, Steyn City, north of Fourways.

The golf and residential development 810 hectares has been described as Africa’s largest residential development to date.

Steyn City chief executive officer Giuseppe Plumari said the development was a catalyst for the growth of the Fourways node.

This has included huge investment into roads and services infrastructure such as sewerage, water and basic services.

The biggest contribution was in roads infrastructure, which saw R300m, or a third of the total costs, set aside to expand arterial roads.

As a result, William Nicol Drive has been transformed into a six-lane dual carriageway with additional dedicated pedestrian and cycle lanes.

In addition, work is being done, in conjunction with the government, to extend the busy road through to the N14.

“We have given a commitment that once specific volumes are reached, we will further partner with the government for additional infrastructure upgrades,” Plumari said.

Steyn City is also partnering with the government to upgrade Cedar Lane so that it has two lanes on either side, from Fourways Life Hospital through to Steyn City.

The new city will make a bulk contribution of a third of the total construction.

Homes on the golf development include flats, clusters and free-standing units. Prices start from R1.65m.

The open-style living area has natural vegetation, waterfalls, open spaces, paved boulevards, running and cycling tracks, a skate park, outdoor gym and golf course clubhouse.

Homes have uninterrupted views of parkland within metres.

The resort is on a wildlife reserve with green areas that will never be developed. Owners with property there will not be allowed to plant anything without permission, so that the vegetation can remain natural.

About 11 500 jobs have been created in the Diepsloot and Cosmo City areas.

Artists have been used to create decorative pieces throughout the estate.

A medical centre and school will open this year. A city centre is also under construction and will open in 2018. It will comprise restaurants and retail and commercial outlets.

Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding Property Group, said the multi-billion-rand development was a major boon for the economy and indicated how much faith investors had in the rapidly growing Gauteng residential development property market.
