May factory output falls

Johannesburg - South Africa's manufacturing output contracted by 3.7 percent year-on-year in volume terms in May after shrinking by a revised 1.9 percent in April, Statistics South Africa said on Thursday.

On a month-on-month basis, factory production was down by 3.3 percent, and fell 2 percent in the three months to May compared with the previous three months.

Economists polled by Reuters expected factory output to contract by 1.5 percent year-on-year in May and by 0.2 percent on a month-on-month basis. - Reuters
