Cape Town – Global environmental organisation Greenpeace on Friday said the resignation of South Africa’s power utility chief executive Brian Molefe was good news for those advancing the use of renewable energy in the country.
“Since Brian Molefe was personally spearheading Eskom’s anti-renewable energy campaign, this news is good for all South Africans,” said Greenpeace Africa’s Senior Climate and Energy Campaign Manager Melita Steele in a statement.
“It is now time to question Molefe’s single minded determination for nuclear to go ahead in this country, and to make sure that Eskom’s new CEO is someone who is able to lead the utility into a clean, renewable energy future that puts the interests of South Africans first.”
Molefe announced his his resignation on Friday, ten days after the release of former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s “State of Capture” report which raised serious concern about his conduct in relation to the Gupta family and their mining company Tegeta.
He said he would leave his post on January 1, 2017 and would take time off to reflect before deciding on his next career move.
