Durban - South Africa’s former finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene, who was unceremoniously sacked by President Jacob Zuma last year, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban on Wednesday.

The doctorate in accounting and finance follows his appointment earlier this week to the board of investment and management firm Allan Gray.

“Nene was chosen for his expertise and contribution in the finance field in the public and private sector,” said Gona Govender, the university’s Dean of Management Sciences.

It is understood that the doctorate had been considered by the university before Nene was sacked by Zuma in December.
