Johannesburg - No power outages are scheduled for Wednesday evening, but the power grid remains under pressure, Eskom said.
“We do not foresee the need to implement load shedding tonight (Wednesday), but the system remains tight,” the media desk said.
Beeld reported on Wednesday that Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona told shocked business leaders the power utility was praying the infrastructure would not crash.
“Our senior managers pray that none of the current infrastructure breaks down. It could lead to a complete network breakdown,” he reportedly said.
Beeld reported that according to the Afrikaans Trade Institute (AHI) head Christo van der Rheede, Matona said the country's power network was on the brink of a complete breakdown.
Earlier, the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Sacci) called on its members to submit proposals on how to survive rolling blackouts.
“The potential impacts that load shedding will have on business, business confidence and consumers alike is inestimable,” Sacci president Vusi Khumalo said in a statement on Wednesday.
“Sacci believes that in situations such as this it is not only in the interests of business, but of the country as a whole, that concerted and unified action is necessary.”
Khumalo said Sacci was gravely concerned about the “parlous situation” Eskom found itself in.
Sacci has undertaken to work with Eskom to find solutions.
