The number of passengers transported decreased by 0.2% year on year in November last year‚ Statistics SA figures showed on Monday.

The corresponding industry income‚ however‚ increased by 14.3% over the same period.

Income from passenger transportation increased by 14.9% in the three months ended November compared with the three months ended November 2011.

Income from passenger transportation by road increased by 13.7% (contributing 10.4 percentage points)‚ and income from passenger transportation by rail increased by 19.1% (contributing 4.5 percentage points).

The volume of goods transported increased by 3.8% in November compared with November 2011. The corresponding income increased by 9.9% over the same period.

Income from freight transportation increased by 4.0% in the three months ended November compared with the three months ended November 2011.

The main contributors to this increase were primary mining and quarrying products (6.3% and contributing 2.0 percentage points); and manufactured food‚ beverages and tobacco products (9.3% and contributing 1.3 percentage points. - I-Net Bridge
