Johannesburg - Nominations for the position of the deputy general secretary of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) were closed on Tuesday.

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), tasked with running the election, said voting would be conducted on Wednesday.

North West provincial secretary Solly Phetoe, who has been the voice of farmworkers in North West, mostly opposing evictions, is contesting the position with Oscar Phaka from the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa).

The other five positions were not contested.

Cosatu president S’dumo Dlamini, first deputy president Tyotyo James, second deputy president Zingiswa Losi and treasurer Freda Oosthuizen retained their positions uncontested.

Acting secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali was nominated unopposed to fill the position of the general secretary left vacant when Zwelinzima Vavi was expelled from Cosatu.
