Rustenburg - Over R400 million would be used to developed mining towns in North West province, Local Government MEC Collen Maine said on Tuesday.

He said R482 681 000 had been put aside for the development of mining towns.

“To this end, 11 informal settlements have been assessed and we will therefore continue with installation of internal services for levels 1 and 2,” Maine said during his department budget vote in Mahikeng.

He said the planned informal settlements were Nkaneng, Ikemeleng, Freedom Park, Popo Molefe, YizoYizo, Maditlokwa, Sporong North and Sporong South, Mbeki-Sun, Inkaneng and Wonderkop.

“We further commit to deliver 500 units at Segwaelane village… On the overall 4 188 houses will be constructed around mining towns inclusive of Madibeng, Rustenburg, Kgetlengrivier, Moses Kotane and Matlosana, in this financial year.”

He said as part of the continued development of the Marikana area, more than 200 hectares of land suitable for human settlements has been purchased, and it would yield at least 7,000 mixed development housing opportunities over the next five years.

“We remain committed to continue with our focus on bringing dignity to our people living in mining communities. In this regard 2 999 housing units, of the 3,462 units which were promised, for the 2014/15 financial year, have been constructed around mining towns.”
