Cape Town - More than 200 new jobs will be created from next week when the Langa Junction retail development opens its doors.

The R60 million shopping mall at Langa train station opens on Thursday, and will offer residents and the more than 45 000 commuters who use the station many new shops. Langa Junction is linked with the station and the Epping industrial area via an overhead commuter bridge.

“Langa has up until now been neglected in terms of leading retail outlets. This is the first opportunity the community has had to have leading retailers on their doorstep,” said Jordan Mann, executive director of Krisp Properties.

The centre, which includes anchor tenants such as Shoprite, also offers opportunities for entrepreneurs to set up trading.

Langa Junction forms part of the extensive upgrade of the Langa station and surrounding precinct.

Construction started in July last year, providing about 100 jobs. The main contractor, Granbuild, trained local bricklayers and other workers.

“The majority of the subcontractors came from the local community,” said Winslow Hare of Granbuild.

The centre was completed in eight months.

“We have had tremendous response and co-operation from community members,” said Mann.
