Johannesburg - South Africa's representative to the United Nations Kingsley Mamabolo has met with the General Assembly for talks in New York, the Department of International Relations said on Saturday.

Mambolo and Sam Kahamba Kutesa, president of the 69th session of the UN's General Assembly, exchanged views on South Africa's chair of the Group of 77 (G77), climate change and co-operation between the UN and regional organisations, department spokesman Clayson Monyela said.

South Africa assumed the chair of the G77 earlier in January. During its term, South Africa will be responsible for negotiating and speaking on behalf of two-thirds of the UN membership on key development issues.

The G77 is the largest coalition of developing countries in the UN.

“President Kutesa congratulated the South African delegation under the leadership of ambassador Mamabolo on assuming the chair of the G77 + China ... and expressed confidence that the group will achieve its objective during 2015,” said Monyela.

“He committed to working closely with South Africa to promote the African agenda through leadership roles in both strategic organisations.”
