Johannesburg - The SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) has warned that Rand Water should table “sober minded” increase proposals as it prepares for salary negotiations with the utility.

Talks start on Thursday.

The union said in a statement on Monday that following extensive consultations with its members, it would demand a sliding scale increase including 18 percent for low earners, 15 percent for middle workers and 13 percent for high earners.

The union would also demand a R3 000 housing allowance, an incentive bonus, 10 compassionate leave days per annum, five paternity leave days, a R300 cellphone allowance, a R300 increase in the firefighting allowance, and a 10 percent increase in the meal subsidy.

Samwu also wants benefits enjoyed by other employees to be extended to workers at Rand Water Mpumalanga.

It promised a “no nonsense” approach during negotiations given the current economic difficulties experienced by workers.

“We further urge employers not to bother coming to the table if they will bring insignificant proposals as this will be rejected outright,” the union said.
