Johannesburg -

Hundreds of workers have started trickling in for Cosatu’s May Day rally in Mamelodi, Pretoria.

Although the federation's festivities got off to a slow start on Sunday morning, Moretele Park is slowly turning into a sea of red and yellow.

Those in attendance are donning their ANC T-shirts and union regalia.

Workers are being entertained by a local gospel choir as they wait for the formal programme, which has been delayed, to get underway

In a press briefing last week the federation’s leaders said they expected massive numbers.

Cosatu is hosting a number of rallies in all nine provinces in a move to show their commitment to workers on the ground.

The federation is celebrating this year's international workers day under the theme “celebrating 30 years and defending collective bargaining, workers’ jobs and rights”.

The organisation said it will be campaigning for reforms to the South African economy as many workers were still facing retrenchments, while many citizens were unemployed.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to address the crowds alongside Sdumo Dlamini and other alliance leaders.
