Headline producer inflation accelerated to 8.2 percent year on year last month from 7.7 percent in February, Statistics SA said yesterday. Economists had predicted the rise in the producer price index (PPI) would quicken only slightly to 7.8 percent. On a month-on-month basis, prices at the factory gate rose by 1.3 percent last month, the same rate as February, against market forecasts of a 0.9 percent increase. Stats SA releases five industry-specific producer price indices, with final manufactured goods representing the headline number. – Reuters
