Fourteen shop stewards had been dismissed at Sun City near Rustenburg, Sun International said yesterday.
“After following due process, 14 shop stewards at Sun City complex have been dismissed,” Sun International spokeswoman Tamra Veley said.
She said the shop stewards concerned had chosen not to attend an independent disciplinary inquiry into misconduct. The hearing recommended that they be dismissed.
Trade union federation Cosatu said the shop stewards had been fired for highlighting ill-treatment and exposing racism at Sun City. Branch secretary Madito Molebalwa said workers would strike to demand their reinstatement.
A march was planned for next Friday to demand their reinstatement and implementation of all outstanding agreements reached between Cosatu and Sun City.
“Cosatu will continue to target all main events at Sun City to picket and march until management heeds its call,” Molebalwa said. – Sapa
