Income from accommodation for the tourism industry increased by 15.1% year on year (y/y) in the first quarter, data from Statistics SA (Stats SA) on Monday showed.

Total income (which includes income from accommodation, bar sales, restaurants and other income such as conferences) for the first quarter of 2012 increased by 13.4% compared with the first quarter of 2011.

This increase was due to an increase of 10.3% y/y in the number of stay unit nights sold in the first quarter and an increase of 4.4% y/y in the average income per stay unit night sold.

Income from accommodation in March 2012 increased by 8.4% compared with March 2011 as the number of stay units sold rose by 7.5% y/y. - I-Net Bridge
