Johannesburg - About 2 600 AEL Mining Services employees are expected to down tools to demand an end to racism and improvement of the mining solutions firm’s grading system today.

The strike is being led by the General Industries Workers Union of SA (Giwusa), the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union and the SA Chemical Workers’ Union, which have called on the firm to meet its demands immediately.

Giwusa representative, Mashao Chauke, said workers were fed up with “exploitation”.

Chauke said the company's grading system allowed management to pay workers less and exploit workers. Giwusa said shareholders were drawing out millions in the form of dividends.

“The salaries of directors in 2015 increased by 31.2 percent totalling R21.6 million.”

AEL is a subsidiary of the AECI Group, a locally-based explosives firm.
