Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has revealed that he earns R500 000 per year, Beeld newspaper reported on Saturday.
He did so after he came under fire on Twitter over his salary, and had even taken personal security steps.
Vavi said the Congress of SA Trade Unions paid good salaries to prevent its leaders from accepting government positions.
He said he earned R500 000 a year and was often accompanied by armed guards when going somewhere.
“I can't live in a house today without electric fencing and an alarm.”
He said this became necessary after he received death threats in 2006.
Vavi said his salary was “much lower” than that of cabinet ministers and chief executives of private companies. - Sapa
